TRADE: UNC basketball land in a point-shooter in a blockbuster trade from……

In the transfer portal, the Tar Heel transfer was a highly sought-after three-point shooter.

According to Inside Carolina, Cade Tyson arrived in Chapel Hill on Tuesday after formally signing with North Carolina last week. On Wednesday, the 6-foot-7 forward from Belmont will start courses. He is the first transfer the Tar Heels have added this offseason, ranking as the 38th overall prospect and the 9th small forward in the country according to 247Sports.

According to Tyson, “I’m ready to be a Tar Heel,” Inside Carolina said. “I’m thrilled. Undoubtedly, [UNC] was among the calls I was anticipating. I’m from that state. It is located in the ACC. I grew up seeing them all the time. Growing up, I wouldn’t say I was a huge Carolina fan, but I most definitely am now. Coach Davis gave me a sense of belonging. He explained to me the philosophy of Carolina, the players they plan to have on the roster for the upcoming season, and the kind of position they envision for me.”

Inside the UNC Commitment with Cade Tyson

During the previous season, Tyson averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds as a sophomore. The NCAA ranked his three-point percentage at 46.5 percent and his field goal percentage at 49.3 percent, which placed second nationwide. Tyson and UNC were deemed by 247Sports national basketball analyst Isaac Trotter to be among the top fits in the transfer portal.

“Tyson will make the Tar Heels better, but he isn’t the Harrison Ingram replacement,” Trotter stated. “He is more of a Cormac Ryan substitute. Elliot Cadeau, Ian Jackson, and Seth Trimble are just a few of Carolina’s guards that have shooting issues. For this reason, Tyson is a huge asset. He’s not simply a floor-spacing backup weapon, however. In addition to his powerful pull-up jumper, Tyson can attack long closeouts or curls off pindowns to get to the rim. He can be efficient without the ball in his hands, but when it does, he acts decisively.”

Although Tyson’s defensive footage showed glimpses, Belmont’s defense finished the previous season at No. 130 in the country. In both games, he harassed Tucker DeVries, the star of Drake. Belmont used a combination of man and zone, but Trotter said Tyson’s one-on-one coverage on DeVries was excellent.

Cade Tyson - Belmont - 2023-24 Transfer Portal Highlights

Sherrell McMillan of Inside Carolina noted, “Tyson is an elite shooter.” For that reason alone, North Carolina recruited him. However, he offers more to the table than that. He’s a decent size. He ought to be able to bounce back rather nicely. You need more rebounding from your three now that Armando Bacot is gone, and Tyson can provide it. He’ll have something that no one else on the team now possesses if he can defend. What a rarity a tall shooter is. He doesn’t have to be a fantastic defender, but he will undoubtedly play a lot of minutes if he can play with competence and avoid being outplayed.”

A few large men have been given priority by UNC in its ongoing transfer site hunt for Bacot’s replacement. Ven-Allen Lubin, a forward for Vanderbilt, started an official visit with UNC on Tuesday. He started all 26 of the games he played in the season, averaging 12.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks.
