Lions' Coach Dan Campbell Is True Blue, Right Down To His Kneecaps

A well-liked general manager candidate is among the two “well-regarded” new hires made by the Detroit Lions to their front office.

Teams frequently reorganize their front offices and personnel departments in the days and weeks following the NFL Draft. That seems to be the case once more for the Detroit Lions, as Neil Stratton reports that the team has recruited two well-regarded scouts, Tom Roth and Dwayne Joseph, to their ranks. Their precise positions in Detroit are still unknown as of right now.

Why are these guys so well-liked? Let’s take Joseph first. He has been the Raiders’ director of pro scouting for the last five years. Prior to that, he worked for the Philadelphia Eagles for five years, from 2015 to 2019. He contributed to the Eagles team winning its first-ever Super Bowl during his tenure in Philadelphia. These guys from Bleeding Green Nation are describing how important he was to the squad while he was there.

The man who actually found the hidden heroes who made crucial plays in the Philadelphia Eagles’ Wild Card victory over the Chicago Bears was one of the game’s unsung heroes. I am referring to Dwayne Joseph, the director of pro scouting for the Eagles.

Joseph’s career began more than 25 years ago when he worked in player development for the Chicago Bears. He then spent almost 10 years as a scout for the Dolphins (yep, from 2010 to 2011 he was in Miami with Dan Campbell) before returning to the Bears.

Joseph was interviewed in 2022 for the general manager position with the Raiders; he did not win the position, but he did continue in his capacity as director of pro scouting even after the regime changed. There is a rumor circulating that Joseph has interviewed for general manager positions with many teams, including the Lions (which Detroit has not publicly verified):

Additionally, Joseph has compiled a number of lists of “GM candidates to watch,” including one from Jordan Schultz earlier this year and another from Mike Sando of The Athletic from 2022.

Regarding Roth, he has been a scout for more than twenty years. He worked as a college scout with the Bills for his first fourteen years of employment, then spent the final six with the Tennessee Titans. Prior to being taken down from the Titans website earlier this summer, his most recent position there was “college scout.”

Of course, it’s a positive sign that the Lions are bolstering their front office with respected and seasoned personnel. This is especially significant in light of the fact that Detroit has lost two of its most important personnel department members in the last two years: senior director of player personnel Lance Newmark joined the Washington Commanders earlier this year as assistant general manager, and former director of college scouting Dave Sears was hired as the assistant general manager of the Arizona Cardinals in 2023.

Jared Goff's evolution: How much different is the QB with the Lions than the Rams? - The Athletic

After all, Jared Goff is not viewed as a bridge quarterback by the Detroit Lions. Numerous reports claim that the Lions and Goff have reached a long-term extension agreement.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network claims that Goff signed a $212 million, four-year contract with a guaranteed $170 million. With an annual contract of $53 million, Goff is currently the most paid athlete in franchise history. He is currently the quarterback with the highest compensation. At $55 million, only Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals earns more.

In 2021, Goff became a member of the Lions when Matthew Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams. At first, it was thought Detroit would select a new franchise quarterback in the draft and use Goff as a stopgap quarterback.

But even if the Lions had those ideas, Goff’s outstanding play forced them to rethink them. In his first season with the team, he was selected to the Pro Bowl, and in 2023, he had even greater success.

Goff threw for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns in the previous season, finishing with a career-high 67.3% pass completion percentage. With a 12-5 record, the Lions advanced to the NFC Championship Game after winning the NFC North.

The Detroit Lions secured long-term contracts for its star players during this summer. The team inked All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell and outstanding wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to new contracts prior to signing Goff to an extension.
