Sad news: sooners star man committed to a rival club

Oklahoma Football: Gavin Freeman officially put on scholarship

For the 2024 season, Gavin Freeman is relocating from Norman to Stillwater.

Norman is losing a receiver to Oklahoma State.

Gavin Freeman, a transfer from Oklahoma, committed to OSU on Sunday. Freeman returns, giving OSU’s already potent attack another weapon for Alan Bowman to pass to.

Over the previous two seasons, Freeman has participated in every OU game, but he hasn’t had the productivity or role he desires.

Freeman contributed significantly to the Sooners’ offense in 2023, hauling in 19 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. In the Sooners’ victory over Arkansas State in the previous season, he had his best game, catching four passes for 19 yards and a touchdown. In that game, Freeman demonstrated his versatility by adding another touchdown via a punt return.

Freeman’s role was considerably reduced prior to the previous season, but he still produced a few standout performances. His standout performance was during a victory over Kansas. Among his three receptions that season, Freeman hauled in a career-long 41-yard pass.

Freeman shown his ability to be a dual threat in 2022 when he ran seven times for 71 yards and a touchdown. At five feet eight inches and 189 pounds, Freeman may once more exhibit his elusiveness in Stillwater the next season.

Freeman is changing the narrative despite the fact that some athletes, like Trace Ford last year, have gone from OSU to OU. For Mike Gundy’s team, the commitment is significant as they prepare to play in a redesigned Big 12 next season.

OSU went to Arlington for the Big 12 Championship after finishing 10-4 in the previous campaign. OSU appears to be a contender in the conference again the following season thanks to a wealth of returning players on both sides of the ball.

Oklahoma wide receiver Gavin Freeman enters the transfer portal

The Cowboys’ chances of winning their first conference championship since 2011 and possibly qualifying for their first College Football Playoffs are only increased by additions like Freeman.

Former Oklahoma Wide Receiver Gavin Freeman Says He’s Moving to an In-State Rival

Gavin Freeman, a former wide receiver for the Sooners, made his move to Stillwater known early on Sunday morning.

Oklahoma WR Gavin Freeman to Enter Transfer Portal

Gavin Freeman, a former wide receiver for Oklahoma, said on Sunday that he would be attending Oklahoma State.

After playing for the Sooners for two seasons, Freeman made his way onto the transfer portal on Tuesday night. Freeman began his time at OU as a walk-on, but before his sophomore year, he was put on scholarship. In 2023, he was the team’s main punt returner.

During his two seasons in Norman, Freeman played 208 offensive snaps overall, with over 140 coming in 2023. As a true freshman, Freeman had three receptions for 46 yards and seven carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. As a sophomore, he was given increased offensive responsibility.

The former three-star recruit had five carries for twenty yards last year and grabbed 19 catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. In 2023, Freeman also had one touchdown and 122 yards from 18 punt returns.

Freeman didn’t find the endzone again for the remainder of the season, despite scoring on a touchdown reception and returning a punt 82 yards for a score in the same quarter against Arkansas State. Nevertheless, the 5-foot-8 wide receiver should be a valuable asset to the Cowboys system given his exceptional speed and elusiveness.

In the Sooners’ 2022 season opener against UTEP, Freeman’s first play as a college student was an exhilarating touchdown run. The local product broke multiple tackles as he took a handoff 46 yards for the score.

Freeman, who opted to walk on at Oklahoma rather than accept scholarship offers from other Division I universities, is the son of former Oklahoma tight end Jason Freeman. Playing at Heritage Hall (OK), where his father is an assistant coach, is Oklahoma City native Freeman.

Football players have transferred between the Bedlam rivals before; before the 2023 season, former Oklahoma State edge rusher Trace Ford departed Stillwater to play for Brent Venables and crew in Norman. Freeman is not the first athlete to do so.

Prior to their 2023–24 seasons, basketball player Lexy Keys and former OSU softball pitcher Kelly Maxwell both transferred to OU from Oklahoma State.
