Injury boost: Broncos receive two importants stars back from injury set for las vegas rematch

Payne Haas and Kotoni Staggs are expected to play against the Roosters, according to Billy Walters.

NRL news 2024: Payne Haas and Kotoni Staggs in doubt to face Sydney Roosters; Brisbane Broncos, Kevin Walters press conference

On Friday night, Payne Haas and Kotoni Staggs are anticipated to face the Roosters in the Broncos’ first game since the first round at full strength. Both Broncos players were seen as doubts for the rematch after suffering injuries during practice on Thursday.

Haas departed Brisbane’s training session complaining of a sore knee, and Staggs is also dealing with a knee problem. Haas underwent minor surgery on his right knee early in the season, and he had only recently returned to the field. Additionally, on Thursday, the prop ran erratically on the sidelines while wearing a brace on his right knee before vanishing into Broncos headquarters.

However, Billy Walters stated on Friday morning that both are anticipated to start against the Roosters. “From what I’ve heard they’re both gonna play, but they just needed a bit extra warm-up for training and games and ‘cause Captain’s Run is such a light session and it’s only usually about 20, 25 minutes they didn’t really bother jumping in,” Walters told Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux, and Dan on Monday.

We didn’t really need them for the session because they are quite competent, but as long as they are working tonight, everything will be OK. It’s unsettling to think that Big Benny (Ben Te Kura), who is likely larger than Payne Haas, would enter the game if Payne Haas isn’t playing.

On Thursday coach Kevin Walters said both Haas and Staggs will be given every chance to play. “He (Haas) wasn’t too good this morning but we will see how he goes tomorrow,” Broncos coach Kevin Walters said.

NRL 2021: Kotoni Staggs, Brisbane Broncos, contract future after being linked to Parramatta Eels, Gold Coast Titans, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

“We will give him until kick-off, but if he’s not fit he won’t play. If he is fit and ready, we will play him. He has had a little bit of trouble with it. I would be saying he is playing tomorrow. It’s too early in the season to take any risks, particularly with Payne and his knee.

“Kotoni was a little bit up and down as well, he is the other one that still has a bit of a concern. He pulled up a bit sore today. He didn’t do a lot of training, but we will see how he is on game day. He is pretty tough, old Tones.” The Broncos will also be boosted by the return of five-eighth Ezra Mam (finger) and centre Selwyn Cobbo (shoulder) after both missed last week’s win over Wests Tigers.

Final score: The Broncos are left licking their wounds following a thorough 40–18 loss to the Sydney Roosters, and three important players are now questionable for their matchup with Parramatta the following week.

Adam Reynolds, the team’s halfback and captain, may be out for several months due to a suspected bicep rupture, while Jesse Arthars, the winger, has been transported to the hospital with possible jaw fractures.

After being placed on report and sin binned for a shoulder charge, Deine Mariner may also have a case at the NRL Judiciary.

The Broncos, who had fallen behind by 12 points at the break, showed bravery in rallying as Ezra Mam tried to exert control. He set up a try and scored another in consecutive sets to tie the score at eighteen points.

The Sydney Roosters went on a wild rampage when the five-eighth was compelled to leave the field for a head injury evaluation shortly after.

Skipper’s Blues case: Following back-to-back series losses and the outstanding play of Panthers teammate Dylan Edwards, James Tedesco’s status in the New South Wales State of Origin lineup had come under scrutiny.

Nonetheless, the Roosters captain was outstanding on Friday night.

Sensationally, he dictated terms, especially in the second half when, without several of their key players, he attacked Brisbane’s weak points.

Tedesco finished with nine tackle busts, two try assists, two linebreaks, and 243 running meters.

Mam’s time to own it: Ezra Mam should be ready to play against the Eels the following week, despite missing fifteen minutes of action while undergoing a concussion assessment.

Reynolds will also need to step up and leave his imprint on this Broncos squad because he is probably going to be out.

Mam shown symptoms of it two weeks prior to giving way due to a finger injury against the Raiders, and he displayed more of it against Sydney prior to leaving the field.

With a try, two try assists, two linebreak assists, and 86 running metres in the end, the 21-year-old will need to assume an ever larger role going ahead.
