According to a report from Seth Emerson of The Athletic, Kirby Smart, the head football coach at the University of Georgia, has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will make him the highest-paid head coach in college football.

With an extended contract that expires in December 2033, Smart will receive an annual salary of $13 million, an increase of $1.75 million from his previous agreement, plus bonuses of up to $1.55 million.

Over his eight years as Georgia’s football program’s head coach, the Bulldogs have established themselves as the SEC’s benchmark. Since taking charge in 2016, Smart has guided the team to three national championship games, winning two of them. Overall, the program is 94–16. With the Bulldogs, Smart has a 9-2 record in bowl games overall.

For the past few years, Smart has been the top college football coach. With his new contract, he is now paid accordingly, making him the highest-paid coach in the sport.

Furthermore, Georgia disclosed an extension of Josh Brooks’ contract, the athletic director, which runs concurrently with Smart’s through 2030. The $1.275 million annual compensation that Brooks will now receive will rise by $100,000 annually. During the term of the contract, he will also be qualified to receive bonuses of up to $200,000 annually.

Last season, Georgia finished 13-1; the Bulldogs’ only defeat came at the hands of Alabama in the SEC title game, preventing them from qualifying for the College Football Playoffs. Georgia proceeded to win the Orange Bowl 63–3 over Florida State.

Not just Smart is getting a new contract. According to Emerson, a new contract extension has also been approved by the athletic director of Georgia.

Josh Brooks, the athletic director for Georgia, is also getting a new contract. Brooks receives an extension of one year, so the agreement now extends until 2030, with an annual pay of $1,275,000 that rises by $100,000 with each passing year. in addition to annual bonuses of up to $200,000.

Naturally, following the announcement of the extension on Thursday, Brooks had nothing but praise for Smart: “I’m sure you will agree with me that his leadership of our program has been tremendous.” This new deal is truly merited.

Kirby Smart has accomplished amazing things since moving to Athens. He served as Alabama’s assistant coach from 2007 to 2015 before accepting the Georgia position in 2016, marking his first head coaching position.
