ESPN news: new broncos signee breaks silence after Jets-broncos trade
On Saturday, April 28, defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers’ tenure with the New York Jets came to an abrupt end.
In spite of this, JFM’s initial remarks on social media following the deal that moved him to the Denver Broncos were all love.
They told me it’s better to give than to get, so I’m going to keep giving them hell. Love to everyone of the Jets’ supporters for making these past five years really unforgettable. While I am excited about the future, I will not ignore the past. Over and Out on 91.0 JFM Radio. All Love,” Franklin-Myers earlier tweeted on X.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets sent JFM to Denver in return for a 2026 sixth-round selection pick.
Joe Douglas Discusses the JFM Jets-Broncos Trade in a Brutal Way
Following the Jets’ acquisition of veteran pass rusher Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles, there was a lot of talk on social media.
Even while the deal appeared to simply involve a conditional 2026 third-round pick, the actual cost was higher.
Yes, that was a challenging one since we knew it would be nearly impossible to retain JFM at his salary when we made the trade for Haason. I spoke with JFM and [his representative], and both of them were excellent. General manager Joe Douglas disclosed, “That was a few weeks ago obviously after we traded for Haason. We opened it up to let them explore a trade elsewhere.”
Reddick’s $45 million deal is about to expire. He will be playing the same position as Franklin-Myers in 2024 and will count $15 million against the cap.
Douglas said that they brought up the possibility of JFM accepting a pay cut in order to remain rather than being traded.
“There was a conversation, but it ended when the distance became too great for us to cover. Denver was clearly able to accomplish that, Douglas added.
Franklin-Myers’s $55 million contract was set to expire in two years. Through 2025, he was expected to count more than $33 million against the cap.
But they also agreed to a brand-new two-year contract as part of his trade to the Broncos. According to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, the $15 million contract has a two-year option with a fully guaranteed $10 million.
JFM agreed to a significant wage reduction in exchange for facilitating the trade.
It Will Be Difficult for the Jets to Replace JFM
In public, head coach Robert Saleh acknowledged that replacing Franklin-Myers would be “tough.”
In terms of statistics, JFM was a reliable floor player. During his four years with the squad, he averaged 4.4 sacks per season and shown exceptional resistance to the run.
According to ESPN’s Seth Walder, “Franklin-Myers excels in that area, as his 28% run stop win rate over the past three seasons ranks ninth among qualifying edge rushers over that span.”
The player on the field is not a concern for the Jets to replace. They signed Reddick, who is fourth in the league for sacks at his position with 50.5 over the last four years.
The leadership and locker room departments present a challenging replacement assignment.
“JFM’s leadership and all of that will be greatly missed,” Saleh stated. “He’s an incredible player, an incredible human, and an incredible leader.” To reiterate what Joe mentioned, Denver has a really talented guy.
